Mahamed Aly earns second Dana White’s Contender Series chance
Mahamed Aly returns to Dana White’s Contender Series after a rapid defeat last year, facing Alik Lorenz in a second chance at a UFC contract.
Mahamed Aly will get a second opportunity on Dana White’s Contender Series after losing his first appearance in just 20 seconds. He was dropped by an overhand punch before the fight ended with ground-and-pound strikes.
The defeat came against Iwo Baraniewski, who received a UFC contract for his quick finish. Baraniewski has since won three UFC bouts, stopping Ibo Aslan, Austen Lane and Junior Tafa inside the opening 90 seconds each time. He also collected a performance bonus in all three victories and is now ranked 15th in the UFC light heavyweight division.
Aly’s return follows a first-round victory over Diego Peclat at Shogun Fights 32 in March. Aly finished the fight with a body shot, rebounding after his loss to Baraniewski last September. That victory, together with the quality of his previous opponent, helped bring him back to the Contender Series.
Before entering professional MMA in early 2024, Aly built his reputation as a highly decorated grappler. He won the 2018 IBJJF World Championship and began his MMA career with two head-kick stoppages, followed by a third victory via TKO.
Aly then defeated UFC veteran Jared Gooden by unanimous decision before receiving his first Contender Series opportunity. Gooden had a 23-10 record at the time, while Aly’s first three opponents had a combined record of 17-31.
His next test is Alik Lorenz, who is also seeking a route back from disappointment. Lorenz has fought six professional bouts without reaching the final horn and has gone beyond the opening round only once. The winner is expected to be in strong position for a UFC contract.
