Maseko’s FC Copenhagen move confirmed after Zuma’s key role

Thapelo Maseko’s move from Mamelodi Sundowns to FC Copenhagen has been confirmed, with former South African international Sibusiso Zuma playing an influential part in arranging the opportunity. The winger is expected to travel to Denmark in the coming days to complete the move and sign for the Danish club.

The agreement between Copenhagen and Sundowns follows a difficult period for Maseko at Chloorkop, where he had appeared to lose his place in the club’s pecking order. His representative, Glyn Binkin, confirmed that the next stage of the transfer would be finalised in Denmark.

Zuma’s connection with Copenhagen helped give the move added significance. The former Bafana Bafana player previously represented the club, and his involvement was highlighted as an important factor in creating the opportunity for Maseko to continue his career in Europe.

Maseko joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in July 2023. His time at the club has included three challenging years, but the move also brings an opportunity to develop away from South Africa after the winger struggled to establish a regular place in the Sundowns hierarchy.

Binkin also credited Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe, chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, sporting director Flemming Berg and the club’s management for helping facilitate the transfer. He said Maseko and his family remained grateful for the support given during the process.

Copenhagen’s recent form provides a positive setting for the South African’s arrival. They have won four of their last five matches, beating Silkeborg IF 3-1, Polessya 2-1, Lyngby 3-2 and Viborg 2-1, while drawing 3-3 away to Polessya. Across those games, they scored 13 goals and conceded eight.
