NFF sacks Super Falcons crew after 2-1 2027 World Cup playoff loss

Nigeria’s NFF has ordered Justin Madugu and the Super Falcons’ technical crew to leave immediately after missing the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation has dismissed the Super Falcons’ technical crew after the team’s 2-1 defeat by South Africa ended their hopes of reaching the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Coach Justin Madugu and the other members of the staff have been instructed to leave their positions with immediate effect.

The decision was issued by the NFF Executive Committee on Monday, bringing an end to the current technical team’s work with the nine-time African champions. It follows a sequence of results that saw Nigeria fail to secure a place at the global tournament through the usual African qualification route.

Nigeria’s campaign had already deteriorated at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Falcons were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat, their first exit at that stage in the competition’s history. They had also struggled to produce convincing performances across the tournament.

The quarter-final loss carried a major qualification consequence. For the first time, Nigeria did not obtain an automatic Women’s World Cup place from the African championship and instead had to enter the playoff route.

That path required the Super Falcons to beat South Africa in the African playoffs before progressing to the inter-confederation playoffs. Their 2-1 loss to Banyana Banyana ended that opportunity, confirming that Nigeria will not take part in the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The coaching change therefore follows both a historic WAFCON disappointment and the country’s first failure to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. The NFF’s instruction applies to the full technical crew, rather than only Madugu, after the team’s unsuccessful attempt to recover through the playoffs.
