Peter Afolayan leaves Enyimba after one season in the 2026 NPFL

Peter Afolayan has departed Enyimba after the end of his contract, bringing his time at the nine-time Nigeria Professional Football League champions to a close after one season. The move comes before the club’s next campaign, with Enyimba expected to find a replacement for the midfielder in their squad.

Afolayan arrived at the Aba-based side at the start of the previous campaign after leaving Heartland. He became a regular member of the team and was involved as Enyimba worked to avoid relegation during the 2025/26 season.

Enyimba finished 12th in the 2026 NPFL standings with 49 points from 38 matches. Their record was 13 wins, 10 draws and 15 defeats, with 44 goals scored and 42 conceded. The position reflects a campaign in which the club remained well short of the leading places while also securing top-flight survival.

Their closing sequence of results was mixed. Enyimba drew 1-1 away to Ikorodu City, defeated El Kanemi Warriors 3-0 at home, lost 2-0 at Kwara United, beat Remo Stars 2-1 and then suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Enugu Rangers. The run produced two victories alongside two losses and one draw.

Afolayan’s performances have drawn interest from other clubs since his exit from Enyimba. His departure leaves the club with a squad gap to address as preparations continue for the new season, particularly after he featured consistently during a difficult campaign.

Enyimba’s next scheduled match is away to Niger Tornadoes on 30 August 2026 in the Nigeria Professional Football League. The fixture will come after Afolayan’s exit and provides the club with an early opportunity to begin life without the former Heartland player.
