PRURide 2026 gains road-safety backing from MTTD and NRSA
Ghana’s MTTD and NRSA have pledged support for PRURide 2026, urging motorists to respect cyclists ahead of the Accra events.
PRURide 2026 has secured support from Ghana’s road-safety authorities, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) calling for better protection of cyclists. The initiative’s 30 km Fun Ride will take place at the University of Ghana on Saturday, August 22.
The MTTD said the Ghana Police Service was prepared to work with the PRURide organisers to improve cyclist safety and encourage responsible behaviour by all road users. National Director of Operations ACP Dr Samuel Sasu Mensah said the partnership could help promote safer commercial riding in Accra.
The NRSA also urged motorists to reconsider how they treat cyclists on public roads. Its Greater Accra Regional Director, Joshua Quist, said cyclists should be regarded as fellow road users rather than as obstructions, placing them on an equal footing with other people using the road.
PRURide has developed from a cycling event into a wider campaign for cycling, road safety and a greener environment. The 2026 edition involves the Ghana Cycling Federation, Ghana Olympic Committee, Ghana Police Service, NRSA, National Sports Authority, University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate and RITE Sports Services.
The programme will conclude with the PRURide Elite Race on September 6 at the Borteyman Highway. The men’s race will cover 112 km, while the women’s event will be 67.2 km. Prudential Life Insurance Ghana is backing the initiative.
Launched in 2019, PRURide has expanded from 200 cyclists to around 400 in 2025. Solomon Tagoe won last year’s men’s elite race and Mary Samuel took the women’s title. Organisers are expecting participation to rise in the seventh edition, with students among the groups they hope to attract.
