SC Villa beat Kitara 4-1 on penalties for 2026 FUFA Super 8 bronze

Hassan Matovu saved two penalties as SC Villa beat Kitara 4-1 in a shootout after a 0-0 draw to claim FUFA Super 8 bronze.

SC Villa secured third place in the 2026 FUFA Super 8 after defeating Kitara FC 4-1 on penalties at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Tuesday evening. The match finished 0-0 after regulation time, with goalkeeper Hassan Matovu making the difference in the shootout.

Matovu stopped attempts from Nicholas Kasozi and Jerome Kirya to give Villa control of the contest from the spot. Kitara’s Emmanuel Wasswa converted his penalty, but that was their only successful kick as Villa completed a perfect shootout.

Najib Yiga, Patrick Kakande, Reagan Mpande and Frank Ssebuufu all scored for the Jogoos. Their four conversions settled the bronze-medal match and gave Villa a positive finish after their failure to retain the title they won in the previous edition.

The goalless scoreline did not reflect a match without chances. Kitara goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige made two close-range saves from Andrew Otim early on, while Villa came close to opening the scoring in the 37th minute. John Asiimwe had beaten Kibirige, but Murushid Juuko cleared the effort from the goal line.

Both teams made several changes after the interval, yet neither could break the deadlock. Kitara also brought on Kasozi for Frank “Zaga” Tumwesigye early in the match, but the change did not produce a goal before the shootout.

The result gives Villa a measure of recovery after a difficult title defence. They lost to NEC in the semi-final after giving up an early advantage, while their recent league form also included a 0-2 defeat away to Kitara. Villa finished third in the 2025 Uganda Premier League with 61 points from 30 matches, recording 18 wins, seven draws and five defeats and scoring 47 goals while conceding 17. Their other four recent league results were wins over UPDF, NEC and Mbarara City, plus a goalless draw with BUL.
