Shalulile scores in Yanga's 3-1 Tanzania Premier League win

Peter Shalulile scored on his Tanzania Premier League debut as champions Young Africans began their title defence with a 3-1 win over Namungo.

Peter Shalulile scored on his Tanzania Premier League debut as Young Africans began their title defence with a 3-1 victory over Namungo FC at Majaliwa Stadium on Saturday. It was the Namibian striker’s first goal since joining the Tanzanian champions from South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Shalulile’s goal gave him an immediate contribution in his new league, while Yanga collected three points from the opening fixture. The result puts the reigning champions on the front foot as they start their attempt to retain the Tanzanian title.

Namungo made the match difficult for Yanga, but the visitors eventually produced enough quality and composure to secure the win. The result also extended the positive start to the season after Yanga defeated Simba SC to lift the Tanzanian Community Shield a week earlier.

The opening-day victory came with Manqoba Mngqithi in charge. The South African-born coach now has a league win in his first campaign leading Yanga, with the club’s established status as champions reinforced by a successful start against determined opposition.

Shalulile arrived in Tanzania after a productive spell at Sundowns, where he became one of South Africa’s leading forwards. His first Yanga league goal offers an early indication of the attacking role expected from the Namibian international as he begins a new phase of his career.

After the match, Shalulile credited God for the victory and praised his teammates, the technical staff and the substitutes for their unity and support. He also recognised the Yanga supporters who travelled in large numbers, saying the players’ duty is to repay that loyalty with goals and results.
