Sunderland offer Geny Catamo fivefold salary in Sporting pursuit

Sunderland are ready to pay Geny Catamo five times his current net salary as they continue their attempt to sign the Sporting winger. The 25-year-old earns about €600,000 net per year in Lisbon, while Sunderland are prepared to offer close to €3 million annually.

The proposed salary is intended to make a move to the Premier League attractive to Catamo, who already favours the possibility of playing in England. Sunderland are expected to send Sporting another offer this week after an earlier package was rejected.

That proposal included €30 million in guaranteed payment, a further €10 million in bonuses and a 10 per cent share of any future transfer fee. Sunderland have not abandoned the deal and are considering increasing the guaranteed amount to around €40 million.

Sporting could still demand a fee close to Catamo’s €60 million release clause. The Portuguese club regard retaining him as a priority, particularly because he is Rui Borges’ first-choice player on the right. Luís Guilherme is the main alternative in that position, so Catamo’s departure would leave Sporting with a significant selection issue.

Catamo has also begun the season strongly. He started both of Sporting’s league matches and supplied an assist in each, strengthening his importance to the team as Sunderland pursue an agreement before the transfer window closes.

Sunderland’s recent results have been positive despite a 4-2 defeat away to Liverpool. They have beaten York 5-1, Chelsea 2-1 and Everton 3-1, while drawing 0-0 with Manchester United. Their next Premier League fixture is away to Ipswich on 22 August 2026, but their immediate focus remains finding a package capable of persuading Sporting to sell.
