Tinkler hints at more Asante Kotoko surprises in 2026/27 rebuild
Eric Tinkler says Asante Kotoko may add one or two more players after a major squad overhaul before the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.
Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler has indicated that one or two further additions could join the squad before the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season. The club’s last five recorded matches produced one win and four defeats, underlining the scale of the rebuilding task facing the new coach.
Tinkler, appointed before the new campaign, says Kotoko have already brought in the players they identified as necessary for the main part of their recruitment. However, he has left room for additional moves, raising the possibility of more unexpected arrivals before the squad is finalised.
Kotoko have changed the composition of their playing group during the restructuring process. A number of players have departed, while the incoming group includes several foreign-based footballers with considerable experience. Tinkler is now working to combine the new personnel and develop a team capable of competing for honours.
The recent results show why the Porcupine Warriors are seeking a stronger foundation. They lost 2-1 to Swedru All Blacks, went down 3-1 at Bechem United, and then beat Eleven Wonders 2-0. Further defeats followed against Dreams, by 2-0, and Medeama, by 4-0.
Kotoko will have an early test of the reshaped squad against Hearts of Oak in the 2026 Democracy Cup. Their Ghana Premier League campaign will then begin away to newly promoted Debibi United on September 5, 2026.
Tinkler’s immediate challenge will be to make the new players adapt quickly to his methods while the club completes any remaining recruitment. The planned changes are intended to help Kotoko recover from a disappointing 2025/26 campaign and begin the new season with a more competitive squad.
