Tuipulotu says Springboks Test feels like a final for All Blacks

Patrick Tuipulotu says New Zealand’s Test against South Africa at Ellis Park carries the weight of a final despite the All Blacks’ underdog tag.

Patrick Tuipulotu, 33, says New Zealand’s opening Test against South Africa at Ellis Park on Saturday feels like a final. The 57-cap lock believes the match will show whether the All Blacks can challenge the Springboks for the world’s top ranking.

New Zealand enter the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series as the second-ranked team behind South Africa. Tuipulotu rejected the suggestion that the All Blacks should approach the contest as underdogs, describing it instead as a meeting between the two leading sides in the world.

The veteran of the 2019 World Cup has played a key role during New Zealand’s tour. He captained the side in its first match, a win over the Stormers, and also started last week’s victory against the Bulls in Pretoria. The tourists have also beaten the Sharks during their build-up.

Tuipulotu said those three matches had helped the squad establish a shared understanding of its approach. Players across the touring group have had opportunities to take part, while the coaching staff have worked to bring everyone into the same game plan. He expects the Test to demand considerably more than the preceding club fixtures.

The Blues second-rower also welcomed the chance to face a powerful Springbok pack that includes Eben Etzebeth. He said testing himself against the strongest opposition is central to the challenge facing New Zealand as the series begins.

For Tuipulotu, discipline and composure will be decisive if the All Blacks are to overcome South Africa. He identified the set piece, physical intensity and the ability to maintain concentration beyond 80 minutes as major requirements, particularly in the closing stages when small decisions can determine the result.
