Vergil Ortiz Jr. Targets November Middleweight Return After 154 Stalemate

Vergil Ortiz Jr. plans to leave the stalled 154-pound division for a November middleweight return, with four established opponents under consideration.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. plans to return in November at middleweight after spending a year away from the ring and moving on from the stalled 154-pound division. His last appearance came in November 2025, when he stopped Erickson Lubin in the second round.

Ortiz’s manager, Rick Mirigian, is examining four possible opponents for the comeback: Jermell Charlo, Erislandy Lara, Tim Tszyu and Carlos Adames. Each would offer a different test as Ortiz begins his move towards the 160-pound class.

Remaining at junior middleweight had brought limited progress. Ortiz’s WBC interim title had not taken him to a full world championship, while expected bouts with Jaron Ennis, Sebastian Fundora and Xander Zayas failed to materialise. A promotional dispute with Golden Boy occupied the first half of 2026 before a settlement was reached in July, but the division’s stalled match-ups also contributed to his absence.

Charlo would provide the most recognisable name among the options, although his activity is a concern. He has boxed only once since May 2022. Lara would give Ortiz a direct route to a middleweight title because the Cuban holds the WBA belt, but Lara is now 43 and no longer moves with the same speed that defined his peak.

Tszyu could produce a forceful contest between two pressure-minded punchers. The Australian has suffered stoppage defeats to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev, leaving questions about how he would cope with Ortiz’s power. Adames would represent the strongest examination of the four, bringing natural middleweight size, durability and damaging work at close range.

Yoenlis Hernandez is another possible opponent. The Cuban, a two-time amateur world champion, has physical strength, sustained pressure and powerful combinations, though he lacks the profile of Charlo and the championship status of Lara. Facing Hernandez would show whether Ortiz’s power and resilience carry effectively into a division where opponents are naturally bigger. If the move does not work, Ortiz could return to 154 pounds, where the same lack of movement would remain.
