Yuriorkis Gamboa to make bare-knuckle debut at BKB 58 in Miami
Olympic champion Yuriorkis Gamboa will face Yesner Talavera in his first bare-knuckle bout at BKB 58 in Miami on August 29.
Yuriorkis Gamboa, the 2004 Olympic flyweight champion, will begin his bare-knuckle career at BKB 58 in Miami on August 29. The Cuban former world champion is scheduled to face Yesner “Cuajadita” Talavera in a super lightweight bout.
The contest will serve as the co-main event at the James L. Knight Center. Both Gamboa and Talavera are due to make their first appearances in BKB, with the Miami card providing Gamboa’s introduction to the promotion and its three-sided Trigon ring.
Gamboa won Olympic gold for Cuba at 51 kilograms after beating France’s Jérôme Thomas 38-23 in the Athens final. His route to the title also included victories over Igor Samoilenko, Somjit Jongjohor and Rustamhodza Rahimov.
The Guantanamo-born fighter turned professional in 2007 and finished with a 30-5 record, including 18 knockouts. He held the WBA featherweight title between 2009 and 2011 and added the IBF belt in 2010. His later career included major fights at super featherweight and lightweight against Terence Crawford, Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney and Isaac Cruz.
Gamboa’s move into bare-knuckle competition will require changes from the style that brought him success in conventional boxing. Without gloves, fighters face different demands in defence, range management and clinch exchanges, while the Trigon alters the space available compared with a standard four-sided ring. Gamboa’s timing, movement and work from distance will be tested in the new format.
BKB 58 will also feature unbeaten heavyweight champion Gustavo “The Cuban Assassin” Trujillo defending his title against Mark O’Neil. Trujillo has an 8-0 record with eight first-round knockouts. Former UFC title challenger Aspen Ladd is booked to meet Bianca Daimoni, while Alberto Blas is scheduled to defend the BKB super featherweight championship.
