Abdul Mumin bids farewell to Rayo Vallecano ahead of Girona move

Ghana defender Abdul Mumin has ended his four-year Rayo Vallecano stay and is in talks to join Girona after his contract expired.

After four years at Rayo Vallecano, Ghana defender Abdul Mumin has said goodbye to the LaLiga club and its supporters. The 28-year-old centre-back is preparing to leave as a free agent, with talks under way over a move to Girona.

Mumin joined Rayo from Vitoria Guimarães in 2022 and became an important figure during the club’s LaLiga campaigns. His physical defending and consistency helped establish him as a trusted member of the team, while his commitment made him popular among supporters in Vallecas.

In his farewell message, Mumin expressed gratitude to the club, the fans and the wider community around the stadium. He also recognised the staff working away from the spotlight, including the kit managers, cooks, cleaners and other employees who supported the squad during his time in Madrid.

The Ghana international reflected on the connection between Rayo and the neighbourhood it represents. His message focused on the pride attached to wearing the club badge and the sense of belonging he felt from his first day at Vallecas. He said the friendships formed during his stay would remain important to him.

Rayo began LaLiga 2026 in 18th place after losing their opening match 2-1, leaving them with zero points and a goals record of 1-2. Their recent results also include defeats by Feyenoord, Heart of Midlothian and Crystal Palace, alongside wins over Alavés and Villarreal. Their next league match is at home to Alavés on August 20.

Mumin’s departure leaves Rayo without one of their established defenders as the club continues its campaign. Girona are currently leading the pursuit of the Ghanaian, who has attracted interest from several clubs since his contract expired.
