Cameroon collect $2m after historic WAFCON 2026 title triumph
Cameroon will receive $2 million after beating Malawi 3-0 in the WAFCON 2026 final, securing their first continental women’s title.
Cameroon have secured a $2 million prize after beating Malawi 3-0 in the WAFCON 2026 final at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. The victory delivered the Indomitable Lionesses’ first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
Marie Ngah set Cameroon on their way in the 20th minute, and Naomi Ndjoah Eto added a second goal 10 minutes later. Ngah struck again in first-half stoppage time to complete her brace and give Cameroon a three-goal lead before the interval.
The prize money is twice the $1 million awarded to the previous champions. The increase adds a significant financial reward to a title that ended Cameroon’s wait after three previous final defeats by Nigeria, in 2004, 2014 and 2016.
Cameroon’s route to the trophy included a 1-0 quarter-final win over defending champions Nigeria. They then overcame hosts Morocco in a semi-final decided by a penalty shootout before finishing the job against Malawi.
The triumph makes Cameroon only the fourth country to win the women’s continental championship. Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa are the other nations to have lifted the trophy.
Cameroon’s listed Africa Cup of Nations 2025 record placed them second with seven points from three matches, after two wins and a draw, with four goals scored and two conceded. Their recent results also show wins over China, South Africa and Mozambique, alongside defeats by Australia and Morocco. The 3-0 final victory now stands as the defining result in that sequence and gives the country its long-awaited continental women’s football success.
