Fulham boss Arbeloa backs Bassey as a future leader after 1-0 win
Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has praised Calvin Bassey after the defender helped secure a 1-0 pre-season win over Stuttgart.
Fulham beat Stuttgart 1-0 at Craven Cottage in their final pre-season match, with Calvin Bassey helping the Premier League side keep a clean sheet. The victory came after a recent sequence of one win, two draws and two defeats for Fulham.
Manager Alvaro Arbeloa praised the Nigeria international’s display and identified him as a strong fit for the defensive demands he wants from the team. Arbeloa’s approach requires Fulham’s back line to defend high, leaving considerable space behind it, and he believes Bassey has the pace and qualities needed for that system.
The Fulham manager also highlighted Bassey’s character away from the pitch. While describing the defender as someone with a sense of humour, Arbeloa said Bassey’s work ethic becomes clear when training and matches begin. He added that the Nigerian has the capacity to develop into a leader for the squad.
Bassey played an important part in the clean-sheet performance against Stuttgart as Fulham completed their preparation for the new campaign. The defender joined the club in the summer of 2023 after an underwhelming spell in the Eredivisie and has since established himself as a significant member of the Fulham team.
The former Leicester City player has made 101 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring four goals and registering one assist. His defensive contribution against Stuttgart has now been followed by strong public backing from Arbeloa, who sees him as central to the way Fulham intend to play.
Fulham’s recent results include a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, a 1-1 draw at Wolves, a 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth, a 0-2 loss to Norwich City and a 1-1 draw at Al-Ahli Saudi. Their next fixture is a Premier League meeting with Chelsea on August 24, 2026.
