Harare Derby Lite: Dynamos, Scottland meet in Zimbabwe Premiership

Dynamos take a 14-match unbeaten league run into the Harare Derby Lite against Scottland, with both sides pursuing the Zimbabwe Premiership title.

Dynamos and Scottland meet in a Harare Derby Lite with the Zimbabwe Premiership title race at stake, giving the fixture significance beyond the traditional Dynamos-CAPS United rivalry. Both clubs are chasing the same prize after contrasting recent stretches of form.

Dynamos arrive on a 14-match unbeaten league run that has lasted 101 days. Since losing 2-1 to CAPS United at Rufaro on May 10, they have recorded seven wins and seven draws. A victory in this fixture would move the Glamour Boys to within three points of second-placed Hardrock and five points of the champions.

The improvement has come during Aristica Cioba’s short spell as coach. Dynamos have shown greater purpose in attack and more organisation in their overall play since his arrival. His tenure will face one of its biggest tests against a Scottland side that is also competing near the top of the table.

Scottland are two points behind Hardrock and remain in contention to retain the title they won in their first Premiership season. Another championship would give them a distinction no club has achieved in the 64-year history of Zimbabwe’s top division: winning the league in a debut season and then defending it the following year.

Norman Mapeza’s team had won nine matches in succession before Highlanders ended that sequence with a 1-0 victory at Barbourfields. A second defeat against one of the country’s leading clubs would not end Scottland’s campaign, but it would increase the pressure around their position in the race.

The midfield contest could shape the meeting, with Scottland’s Moses Shidolo expected to face Dynamos’ Godknows Dzakpasu. Dzakpasu impressed in the 4-1 win over TelOne, while Shidolo’s form has placed him among the leading candidates for the Soccer Star of the Year award. The match also recalls last year’s 3-2 Dynamos win, settled by Denver Mukamba’s volley, although Mukamba will not feature this time.
