Premier League: Arteta Sets Playing-Time Test for Ethan Nwaneri

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal want Ethan Nwaneri to stay, but only if the 19-year-old can secure regular first-team minutes amid interest from Europe.

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal want Ethan Nwaneri to remain at the club, but the manager has attached a clear condition to that preference. The teenager must have a realistic route to regular first-team football. If Arsenal cannot provide that opportunity, a transfer could become the better option for the player’s development.

“I want him to be at the club but something is in the medium-long term what is best for the player as well,” Arteta said. “Ethan needs to play football and if he stays here it's because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes.” The statement places playing time at the centre of the decision over the 19-year-old, who is also a target of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Nwaneri was left out of Arsenal’s squad for Sunday’s Community Shield meeting with Manchester City in Cardiff. Arsenal won 3-0, with Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard scoring. Nwaneri had featured during pre-season, so his omission from the squad brought renewed attention to the difficulty of securing a regular place in Arteta’s team.

Arteta explained that the Premier League’s limit of nine substitutes made it difficult to include every player he wanted. He has also called for matchday squads to be expanded to 23 players, matching the allowance used in UEFA competitions. That explanation accounts for the selection decision, but it does not remove the wider issue identified by the manager: Nwaneri needs consistent minutes, and Arsenal must decide whether those minutes can be delivered in north London.

Nwaneri is one of the most prominent products of Arsenal’s academy. He became the club’s youngest player and the youngest footballer to appear in the Premier League when he made his senior debut at 15 in September 2022. Arsenal rewarded his progress with a new contract in August 2025 that runs until 2030. His long-term contract gives the club control of his future, but Arteta’s comments indicate that a loan or permanent move remains possible if first-team opportunities are limited.

The midfielder spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Marseille after struggling to secure regular Premier League starts. The move produced nine Ligue 1 appearances, 322 minutes, two goals and one assist, along with two Coupe de France appearances. Nwaneri made an immediate impression in France, scoring 13 minutes into his Marseille debut against Lens in a 3-1 victory at the Stade Vélodrome in January. His involvement then declined after Roberto De Zerbi left the club soon after his arrival.

Several clubs have been linked with a move for Nwaneri. AC Milan has emerged as one of the clearest possible destinations, with discussions reported between the Italian club and Arsenal. A proposed deal could include a buy-back clause, allowing Arsenal to regain the player in the future. Borussia Dortmund has also been mentioned as an option, while RB Leipzig and Fulham are among the other clubs associated with interest. Dortmund’s record of giving young players senior football would make the German club a direct alternative to another season of restricted opportunities in England.

Fulham would offer a different route because Nwaneri could remain in the Premier League while playing more senior football. Galatasaray has entered the wider discussion through Arsenal’s interest in Victor Osimhen, but any suggestion that Nwaneri will definitely be included in a deal for the Nigeria striker remains unconfirmed. The possible destinations therefore range from a move designed to maximise immediate playing time to an arrangement that keeps Arsenal’s future interest protected.

Arsenal’s current form gives Arteta’s squad strong momentum but also underlines the competition Nwaneri faces. The team’s last five results are a 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain, a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace, a 1-0 home victory over Burnley, a 1-0 win at West Ham and a 1-0 victory over Atlético Madrid. Arsenal are unbeaten across that sequence and have won four of the five matches, leaving limited space for a young player seeking predictable minutes.

The next scheduled fixture is Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Coventry on 21 August 2026. Nwaneri’s status will be watched closely as the league campaign develops, but Arteta’s position is already defined. Arsenal would prefer to keep the academy graduate, yet that preference depends on football rather than contract length or potential alone. If the club cannot guarantee a meaningful role, the transfer interest around Nwaneri is likely to remain a central part of his next decision.
