Tinkler backs Kotoko to challenge for 2026/27 Ghana Premier League
Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler says his squad has the quality to compete for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League title after a trophyless season.
Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler believes his side has the quality to compete for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League title. The Kumasi club ended the 2025/26 season without a trophy, increasing the importance of their preparations under the South African coach.
Tinkler made the assessment after Kotoko defeated Heart of Lions in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday. He said the club’s main objective was to compete at the highest level in the league, with a finish in the top two also identified as a target.
The coach, who joined Kotoko in July, has been working with the squad ahead of the new campaign. He regards the players available to him as strong enough to mount a serious challenge for the league rather than simply secure a high finish.
Kotoko still have two matches in their preparation schedule. They are due to play again on Sunday before meeting Hearts of Oak in their final preparatory fixture, a cup match that Tinkler views primarily as part of the build-up to the league season.
For Tinkler, the league carries greater importance than the remaining preparation matches. His focus is on ensuring that Kotoko perform consistently once the Ghana Premier League begins and compete for the leading positions.
The club’s failure to win any trophy last season means the new coach will be expected to deliver a stronger campaign. Tinkler’s early message is that Kotoko possess the materials required to challenge for the title, while the immediate goal is to complete their preparations before the league starts.
