Ugonna Onyenso puts defence first ahead of Detroit Pistons debut

Ugonna Onyenso will carry his rim protection into the NBA after Detroit acquired the Nigerian-born center’s draft rights from Houston.

Ugonna Onyenso has identified defence as the foundation of his NBA game as he prepares to make his debut with the Detroit Pistons. The 6-foot-11 Nigerian-born center was chosen 53rd overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2026 NBA Draft before his rights were acquired by Detroit.

Onyenso’s immediate objective is to preserve the defensive strengths that secured his opportunity at the professional level. His ability to protect the rim and affect opponents near the basket remains the clearest part of his profile as he moves from college basketball into the NBA.

That defensive reputation was built during his senior season at Virginia. He averaged 2.9 blocks per game, led the Atlantic Coast Conference in blocks and earned selection to the ACC All-Defensive Team. He also finished the conference tournament with 21 blocks.

The Pistons are therefore adding a young center whose established qualities include shot-blocking, mobility, running the floor and finishing close to the basket. Onyenso’s length and movement have also helped attract attention from NBA scouts, who have viewed his defensive tools as the strongest elements of his game.

He knows that his offensive development will be important as he adjusts to the higher level. Onyenso showed a greater willingness to shoot from distance in his final college campaign, making 10 of 36 attempts from three-point range, while converting 72.7 per cent of his free throws.

His path to Detroit has also included a significant international development background. Born in Owerri, Nigeria, Onyenso spent three years at NBA Academy Africa in Senegal before moving to the United States. He later became the youngest player to represent Nigeria’s senior men’s national team when he made his debut at 17.

For the Pistons, Onyenso arrives with a defined defensive identity and room to broaden his contribution in attack. His first priority is to keep influencing games around the rim while building the offensive aspects needed for his NBA career.
