Benjani Jr impresses as Highlanders win Chibuku Super Cup tie 3-1
Benjani Mwaruwari Junior made a composed Highlanders debut as Bosso beat Chicken Inn 3-1 on penalties to reach the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals.
Benjani Mwaruwari Junior began his Highlanders career with an encouraging competitive debut as Bosso defeated Chicken Inn 3-1 on penalties in the Chibuku Super Cup Round of 16 at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday. The result sent Highlanders into the quarter-finals.
The forward, who joined the Bulawayo club during the July transfer window, entered the match as a second-half substitute. It was his first appearance for one of Zimbabwe’s biggest clubs after developing his football career in the United Kingdom.
Highlanders assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube was in charge for the match because head coach Benjani Mwaruwari was absent. Dube highlighted the youngster’s ability to take instructions, keep his game simple and use his pace during his introduction.
Dube also felt that the substitute handled the demands of playing for Highlanders without being overwhelmed. The club’s profile and the expectations around its players can create pressure for a newcomer, but the teenager remained composed and produced a positive cameo.
The appearance was not long enough to give a full evaluation of the forward, but it offered the technical team early signs of what he could contribute. His speed, discipline and calmness were the main positives from the first outing, while his limited minutes leave room for a gradual increase in responsibility.
Dube indicated that Highlanders intend to build the player’s involvement carefully as he adjusts to Zimbabwean football and the demands of the club. The penalty victory has kept Bosso’s cup campaign moving, and Mwaruwari Junior now has a first competitive appearance from which to develop as the quarter-finals approach.
